Alright, I’m thinking of moving this month! I’m focusing on Maryland and it is so appealing……crabs, oysters and clams. All my favorites. But enough about me. This is about you where you want to retire. Did I say crabs, oysters and clams???????? This state has it all. Dunes to seagrass to marshlands to forest. It is the wealthiest state in the union and has the lowest poverty rate. And it is one of the most educated. It has over 350 bio-tech firms. It is called “America in Miniature”. The majority of the population is in the D.C./Baltimore area. It is 5.6 million. Maryland is on of the 13 colonies that revolted against British rule in the American Revolution. In 1790, they gave away the land that is now D.C. During the War of 1812 when the Brits attempted to capture Baltimore was when Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner. The economy is based on several things. The largest is transportation in rail and trucking. That is comprised on the industries of iron ore, petroleum, sugar and fertilizer. But, it is also based on technical and administration services for defense and aerospace industries. The state also is home to John Hopkins. All the above makes it the highest in the nation for white collar jobs. The income bracket is 2 to 4.75%. The sales tax is 6%. It has always been controlled by Democrats. In 1980, it was one of six states to vote for Jimmy Carter. If makes it any clearer, Bill Clinton fared better there than any other state other than his own. Recreationally, it has everything a person could want. In fact, the official state exercise is walking. But, you could also raft, tube, scuba dive, and do anything else. It’s a great State so check out the communities on our site at http://www.activeadultliving.com. |
